First, the U.S. Military did give Russia warning of the air strike ahead of time. Second, the strike on the airbase went to great lengths to avoid the Russian barracks on the site. There are a few other reasons why this may not escalate, but also reasons why it could include the animosity between the United States and Russia.
Will the Syria Strike Lead to World War III?? Many Americans are looking at the strike President Donald Trump issued on Syria as the potential start of World War III. The strike was carried out last week and destroyed much of a Syrian airbase. Since the strike, traffic for searches for information on World War 3 and on being drafted into the military has gone up.
Historically, it has been a single incident that crossed a line and started a world war. World War I began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in June 1914. While the United States may not have gotten involved in either WWI or WWII initially, someone crossed a line and we ended up involved.
READ CAN I GET DRAFTED?
It’s easy to look at the recent airstrike on the Syrians airbase as a possible starter to the next World War. Before we jump to this conclusion, let’s take a look at the players involved in Syria and what could happen.
Consider the Syrian Players
Syria is in the midst of a horrific civil war between the regime of President Bashr al-Assad and a number of different rebel groups. It has been going on since 2010 and both Iran and Russia have chosen the side of Assad. Both countries have provided military and financial backing to help Assad remain in power.
On the other side of things, the United States has worked with other partners to help keep ISIS from expanding in Iraq and Syria. There are actually 62 countries as a part of a coalition heling out with this mission. Since President Assad opposes ISIS, it has allowed the U.S. to carry out the anti-ISIS strategy.
However, the recent strike on Syria has taken the U.S. out of the only-ISIS fight. We are now a part of the civil war itself.
Could World War III Realistically Be Coming?
With major world powers involved in the Syrian conflict, a World War may seem possible. However, there are reasons why this may be a stretch.
First, the U.S. Military did give Russia warning of the air strike ahead of time. Second, the strike on the airbase went to great lengths to avoid the Russian barracks on the site.
There are a few other reasons why this may not escalate, but also reasons why it could include the animosity between the United States and Russia. Russia already pulled out of an agreement to coordinate aircraft operations in Syrians air space with the U.S.
The combination of a Syrian President with nothing to lose, animosity between Russia and the U.S. and the retaliation of President Trump over the use of chemical weapons could be the recipe for World War III. Only time will tell.
