Prior Service Options When Joining the Air Force
————————————————————————————————————————————

When the contract is up for any enlisted personnel, they either would like to go back to civilian life with the training and skills they have learned, or they re-enlist and continue to receive benefits and incentives the military gives to its Armed Forces.

Deciding to re-enlist can also give enlisted members benefits that would otherwise not be offered, such as bonuses or the ability to be flexible in career options. With the many programs that are offered to enlisted personnel with prior service, it is worth the time to explore options that enhance the future. Here are a few of the common questions that are asked in regards to Prior Service programs:

What can I do to qualify?
Each branch has its own requirements or standards, so be sure to check with a recruiter on the most up-to-date information. However, your previous job and experience can also impact the option to re-enlist. Depending on demands, there is a possibility you may have to take a physical exam as well as re-take the ASVAB, but these are all questions a recruiter can verify.

Do I have to go through Basic Training again?
This depends on many factors. If you re-enlist with the same branch you previously belonged to, you may be able to bypass going through basic training again. If you decide to move to another branch, expect to go through their respective basic training or boot camp. When you move jobs, it can also be possible to go through the process again, but be sure to ask a recruiter since they have in- depth information for each situation.

Will my pay remain the same?
Depending on your re-enlistment job, this can vary as well. If you decide to re-enlist with the same job within the same branch, there is a good chance that pay will remain the same or close to it. If you move to another branch or job, you may start out lower since you would join at a more entry-level position depending on training and experience. Ask a recruiter about pay scales before committing to a new job, just in case it may lower more than you expect.

Can I keep my benefits?
You will not lose your benefits, and may in fact be able to receive additional benefits. All time spent in the military is accumulated for the future including retirement benefits, tuition assistance or GI Bill requirements.

If you decide to continue on in the military after your contract is up, be sure to research your options and ask your recruiter any questions you may have before signing the contract. Spending more time in the military can enhance the future with additional benefits and incentives!
